A modified version of Windows 11 has been stripped down with limited memory requirements, and stored onto laptop GPU memory.

Modder and software developer NTDEV teased his work, using a modded Windows 11 operating system called Tiny11, alongside a third-party tool called GpuRamDrive, squeezing the whole OS onto the laptop GPU memory. The laptop GPU in question is the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Laptop GPU with 4GB of GDDR6 memory.

The tool itself creates a RAM disc which gets stored into the GPU memory, and not the system RAM like usual. Tiny11 OS installation doesn't require anything over 4GB of space, fitting neatly into the 4GB framebuffer of the GeForce RTX 3050 Laptop GPU. Windows 11 still needs regular system memory in order to function, but this test shows that GPU memory is capable of pushing very fast and very quick deployment of the OS.

We're talking about 1960MB/sec (1.9GB/sec) reads and 2497MB/sec (2.5GB/sec) writes, and that's all on the lowest-tier mobile Ampere GPU with its 4GB of GDDR6 memory clocked at 14Gbps on a smaller 128-bit memory bus.
